Senior Quantity Surveyor – Energy & Gas Infrastructure

About the Role

Our client, a rapidly growing main contractor within the UK’s energy and gas infrastructure sector, is seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to support the expansion of its Utilities division. This is an excellent opportunity to take on a key commercial role across critical infrastructure projects, contributing to the delivery of essential energy networks nationwide. You will play a pivotal role in driving commercial performance across multiple projects, ensuring strong financial outcomes while maintaining compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements. Working closely with clients, project teams, and the supply chain, you’ll help maximise value, manage risk, and support successful project delivery within a collaborative environment.

If you’re ready to take the next step with an industry-leading organisation, this could be the role for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take full commercial ownership of Energy/Gas infrastructure projects from pre-contract through to final account
  • Administer and manage NEC3/NEC4 contracts (Option A & C), including compensation events, change control, and risk management
  • Negotiate, place, and manage subcontracts, ensuring alignment with project and commercial objectives
  • Manage subcontractor and supplier accounts, including applications, valuations, payments, and final accounts
  • Monitor project costs, forecasts, and budgets, identifying and reporting cost variances and commercial risks
  • Produce monthly Cost Value Reconciliation (CVR), valuations, and commercial reports
  • Prepare and manage Earned Value Analysis (EVA) and cost performance data
  • Maintain accurate records, including Defined Cost documentation for audit purposes
  • Manage and report on Pain/Gain mechanisms where applicable
  • Undertake site visits to monitor progress, assess commercial impact, and ensure contractual compliance
  • Identify, assess, and manage change, including evaluating cost and liability implications
  • Monitor performance against programme, cost, and key project milestones
  • Manage defects, disputes, and commercial queries with both clients and subcontractors
  • Lead the commercial close-out process, ensuring all contractual obligations are met
  • Provide leadership and support to junior commercial staff where required

About You

  • Proven experience as a Senior Quantity Surveyor within the Energy, Gas, or Utilities infrastructure sector
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC3/NEC4 contracts, particularly Options A & C
  • Commercially astute with a solid understanding of contract law and risk management
  • Experience managing subcontractor accounts and complex supply chains
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, project-driven environment and manage multiple priorities
  • Confident communicator with experience liaising with clients, Local Authorities, and internal teams
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills, with attention to detail

Qualifications

  • BSc in Quantity Surveying or a related commercial discipline
  • MRICS, MCIOB or equivalent (desirable)
  • Experience in civil engineering, utilities, or infrastructure projects
  • Strong data analysis and reporting capability
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel); willingness to develop further system skills
  • Experience with management accounts and cost reporting
  • Previous line management experience (desirable)
  • Full UK driving licence
  • CSCS card (relevant level)
