Senior Engineer – Civil Engineering & Water Infrastructure
Overview:
We are recruiting on behalf of a leading main contractor who has recently secured a major multi-site regional water framework. This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced Senior Engineer with 5+ years of site experience to join an established contractor, overseeing the engineering standards, quality assurance, and technical delivery across multiple active AMP8 civil engineering projects.
The scope of work features high-profile environmental and river protection upgrades across the North West. As the lead Senior Engineer on-site, you will oversee complex heavy civils assets, including deep segmental caisson shafts (ranging up to 15m in diameter), large offline detention tanks, new wet wells, and extensive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) network modifications designed to dramatically improve regional infrastructure resilience.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Engineering Oversight: Establish precise survey control and levels across multiple contracts, ensuring that all detailed setting out aligns perfectly with contract drawings.
-
Technical Coaching: Supervise, mentor, and coach site engineers on daily setting out activities, ensuring they understand their responsibilities and providing support during critical setting out phases.
-
Team Development & Line Management: Act as the formal line manager for junior engineering staff, driving their professional growth, delivering annual progress reports, and actively participating in the recruitment of new site engineers.
-
Deep Civils Control: Manage the precise engineering alignment and tolerances for major geotechnical assets, including deep shaft sinking, caisson builds, and large-scale drainage schemes.
-
Quality Lead: Compile regional Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and Quality Management Plans, briefing site teams prior to project delivery and driving the close-out of technical queries.
-
Compliance Audits: Conduct scheduled instrumental checks and quality audits, providing constructive feedback to management teams where corrective actions are required.
-
Safety & Temporary Works: Champion a zero-incident safety culture, ensuring all engineering activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations whilst managing temporary works requirements (TWC/TWS) on-site.
-
Material Procurement: Undertake accurate pre-start material take-offs and collaborate with project managers to populate and manage material procurement schedules.
-
Site Management Support: Assist Sub Agents and Site Agents with developing efficient construction methods, deputising for them on-site when required to keep projects on track.
-
Documentation Management: Coordinate the collection and verification of accurate 'as-built' data and quality assurance files, planning at least two months in advance to ensure seamless asset handovers.
-
Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain excellent relationships between operatives, subcontractors, and clients, attending early tender handovers, pre-commencement meetings, and project design reviews.
-
Safe Systems of Work: Author, review, and issue method statements and risk assessments, while regularly delivering engaging technical toolbox talks to site teams.
Qualifications:
-
Experience & Tenure: A minimum of 5+ years of hands-on site experience, with a proven track record managing the engineering and quality across multiple sites as a Senior Engineer or Sub Agent within civil engineering (water industry experience is highly desirable).
-
Academic Profile: Degree, HNC, or an equivalent qualification in a civil engineering or construction-related discipline.
-
Accreditations: Valid CSCS Card, SMSTS, and Confined Space training are essential for this Senior Engineer position.
-
Temporary Works: Qualification or proven experience as a Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) or Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS).
-
Technical Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD, strong report-writing capabilities, and a solid background setting out for infrastructure, deep drainage, and reinforced concrete works.
-
Leadership Traits: Excellent communication and mentoring skills, with a natural ability to challenge designs, solve problems independently, and collaborate with client representatives.
Benefits:
-
Competitive salary complemented by structured line management appraisals to support long-term Senior Engineer career progression
-
Company car, green car scheme, or a generous car allowance (dependent on position)
-
Company pension scheme and life assurance policy
-
Private medical insurance coverage
-
25 days of annual leave (plus 8 bank holidays), loyalty days, and continuous service awards
-
Allocated paid volunteering hours to support local community initiatives
-
Flexible benefits via salary sacrifice alongside access to accredited Senior Engineer leadership training and professional coaching
