Design Manager – Battery Energy Storage (BESS)
Are you ready to step into a role where your decisions directly shape the future of the UK’s energy infrastructure?
This is an opportunity to lead at the forefront of the energy transition, delivering next-generation Battery Energy Storage Schemes (BESS) that are redefining how power is generated, stored, and distributed across the grid.
You’ll be joining a fast-growing, highly collaborative engineering environment where multi-disciplinary teams, complex technical challenges, and real-world impact come together on a national scale.
This is not a back-office design role — it’s a leadership position at the centre of major infrastructure delivery, working closely with clients, driving technical excellence, and influencing how critical energy systems are designed and delivered.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead the end-to-end design delivery of complex BESS projects, from early concept through to construction-ready solutions
- Build and inspire high-performing, multi-disciplinary engineering teams across civil and electrical disciplines
- Act as a key technical and strategic interface with clients, ensuring solutions are practical, innovative, and commercially robust
- Take ownership of CDM 2015 responsibilities, acting in a Principal Designer capacity
- Oversee health, safety, quality, programme, and financial performance across multiple live projects
- Drive a strong culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Lead the design of electrical connections across LV up to 400kV, including both contestable and non-contestable works
- Play a key role in tenders and early-stage project shaping for major infrastructure schemes
What makes this role different
- You’ll be working directly on high-impact energy infrastructure projects supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions
- You’ll operate in a multi-region, multi-disciplinary delivery environment, coordinating expertise across engineering, design, and construction
- You’ll have genuine influence — not just on projects, but on team structure, capability growth, and delivery strategy
- You’ll be part of a business that combines engineering depth with a strong culture of delivery, safety, and innovation
What we’re looking for
- Degree-qualified in engineering or a related technical discipline
- Chartered Engineer (or working towards equivalent status)
- Proven experience leading multidisciplinary design teams in a design & build environment
- Strong background across both civil and electrical design disciplines
- Deep understanding of electrical networks from LV through to 400kV
- Experience delivering major infrastructure or energy projects
- Strong capability in stakeholder management, client engagement, and technical leadership
- Comfortable managing complex tenders and large-scale infrastructure programmes
- Able to travel to the Leeds office/site 2–3 days per week when required
What you’ll get in return
- Competitive salary with performance-based progression
- Clear leadership development and career progression pathway
- Flexible benefits package covering lifestyle, health, and financial wellbeing
- Structured professional development and ongoing technical training
- A genuine opportunity to help shape the future of the UK’s energy infrastructure
