Freelance Project Manager – Muck Shift / Earthworks
Location: Sunderland (Greenfield Site)
Contract Type: Freelance / Contract
Start: ASAP
Duration: Initial contract with potential extension
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Freelance Project Manager to lead a muck shift and bulk earthworks package on a greenfield development in Sunderland.
You will take full responsibility for managing the project from mobilisation through to completion, ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, and within budget.
This is a hands-on role suited to a Project Manager with strong earthworks experience who is comfortable operating in a fast-paced site environment.
Key Responsibilities

Overall management of the muck shift / bulk earthworks package

Planning and sequencing works in line with programme requirements

Managing subcontractors, plant, and labour resources

Ensuring compliance with HSEQ standards and site-specific RAMS

Monitoring progress, costs, and productivity

Liaising with the client, engineers, and local stakeholders

Managing site reporting, progress updates, and commercial awareness

Identifying and mitigating programme and ground-related risks
Requirements

Proven experience as a Project Manager on muck shift / earthworks / enabling works projects

Strong understanding of bulk excavation, disposal, and haulage operations

Experience working on greenfield sites

SMSTS (essential)

CSCS (Black or Gold preferred)

Strong organisational and communication skills

Ability to work autonomously and take ownership of delivery
