Description

Overview

I am recruiting on behalf of a main contractor for a Senior Engineer to join their delivery team on major civil engineering and infrastructure projects. This is a hands-on, site-facing role responsible for survey/set-out, engineering delivery, quality control and the development of junior engineers. We are seeking candidates with a strong self-delivery background — ideally people who have worked for a subcontractor or tier-1 contractor and who have demonstrable delivery experience across multi-utilities, water, gas, power, communications and tunnelling. Location and salary details will be provided separately.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and verify survey and level control for contracts; provide clear handover for daily setting-out activities.

  • Undertake detailed setting out from contract drawings and be present for critical setting-out operations.

  • Supervise, coach and line-manage Site Engineers and trainees; support recruitment and development of engineering staff.

  • Lead production and briefing of method statements, ITPs and Quality Management Plans; conduct and close out quality checks and audits.

  • Support the Site/Sub Agent and deputise when required; contribute to efficient work methods, resource planning and materials procurement.

  • Carry out instrumental checks and maintain accurate site records (health & safety, as-built and QA documentation).

  • Run and issue toolbox talks, ensure statutory and client compliance on site and promote incident-free delivery.

  • Attend project design and coordination meetings and resolve technical/interface issues across disciplines and utilities.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree, HNC or equivalent in Civil Engineering (or equivalent practical experience).

  • Proven site engineering experience in setting out and delivering civil engineering/infrastructure works, including reinforced concrete and highways packages.

  • Demonstrable self-delivery experience — experience delivering packages directly (subcontract or tier-1 delivery) on heavy infrastructure schemes.

  • Experience working across multiple sectors such as multi-utilities, water, gas, power, communications and tunnelling.

  • CSCS card and SMSTS.

  • Competent with AutoCAD (or similar) and confident producing/reviewing technical drawings.

  • Strong record keeping, report writing and ability to run quality systems.

  • Able to communicate effectively with clients, site teams and subcontractors and to challenge/resolve design issues.

Desirable:

  • Confined space training.

  • Utilities Avoidance, TWC or other industry-specific tickets.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and pension.

  • Private medical and life assurance options.

  • Generous annual leave plus public holidays and volunteering/loyalty days.

  • Company vehicle/allowance.

  • Structured training, leadership development and clear career progression.

  • Employee assistance programme and flexible benefits options.

If you are a technically strong Senior Engineer with proven self-delivery experience across utilities and heavy infrastructure and want to lead high-profile site delivery, apply now.
