The Role
We are seeking an experienced Managing Estimator to lead our estimating function. Reporting to senior leadership, you will be responsible for ensuring accuracy, competitiveness and consistency of all pre-contract cost estimates. You will collaborate closely with project teams, design, procurement, and commercial departments to manage risk, value engineering, and drive cost efficiencies without compromising quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all estimating activities: tendering, preparing cost estimates, reviewing proposals, assessing subcontractor bids, pricing materials, labour, plant, etc.
- Develop and maintain a robust estimating process, tools, and standards to ensure consistency and best practice.
- Value engineering: suggest alternatives and innovations to achieve cost efficiencies while maintaining design intent and quality.
- Risk analysis: identify potential cost risks, uncertainties and ensure they are properly allowed for.
- Liaise with procurement to source materials, subcontractors, and ensure accurate input data.
- Collaborate with design, project management and operations teams from early stages to ensure that cost considerations are embedded.
- Monitor market rates, supply chain trends, and material cost fluctuations to benchmark estimates and update cost databases.
- Mentor, guide and, where applicable, manage estimating team members, providing training and feedback.
- Produce timely, accurate tender submissions; ensure compliance with requirements and completeness of documentation.
Person Specification
- Extensive experience in estimating in the construction industry, particularly in commercial / industrial / retail / leisure / healthcare sectors.
- Strong technical knowledge of building methods, materials, labour and plant costs.
- Excellent numerical and analytical skills; able to interpret drawings, specifications, and contracts.
- Proficient in using estimating software and tools; good computer literacy (spreadsheets, costing software, etc.).
- Strong attention to detail, ability to deliver under tight deadlines, and manage multiple tenders simultaneously.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills; ability to negotiate with suppliers/subcontractors, manage stakeholders, and collaborate across disciplines.
- Ability to lead and develop a small team, and to drive continuous improvement in estimating processes.
- Qualified to degree level or with relevant industry qualifications (e.g., Quantity Surveying, Estimating, Construction Management) is desirable.
